Holy Week and Easter
The services of Holy Week and Easter Sunday are among the most ancient in the church.
We begin on Palm Sunday with a procession around the block as a re-enactment of Jesus's "triumphal" final journey into Jerusalem before his betrayal, death and resurrection.
The services of the week re-enact those final days.
Wednesday at 8PM in the Sanctuary. we observe Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a medieval service of chanted psalms and special settings of Biblical texts dealing with temptation, betrayal, loneliness and abandonment. The service involves the gradual diminishing of light in the Sanctuary until only the "Christ" light remains.
Thursday at 8PM in the Sanctuary, we observe Maundy Thursday. Maundy is from the Latin Maundatum meaning "mandate" or "command." The command is to "do this for the remembrance of me." This is said by Jesus after he washes the feet of his disciples and after he blesses and shares the bread and wine at the meal. We observe foot washing and Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion) as well as an extended meal and conversation in the midst of the service. We conclude with the reservation (placing a aside for later consumption) of the elements from Communion and vigil in the chapel.
Friday, 12-3PM in the Sanctuary, we observe Good Friday with the Good Friday Blues. The Good Friday Blues is a telling of the passion story as told in the gospel of John set to Blues music. The service includes the adoration of the cross and distribution of communion. For this service, it is okay to come and go as needed throughout the service.
[Saturday at 11AM there is a Community Easter Egg Hunt in the West Yard. Although not technically a liturgy of the church, we observe it annually with great joy and gladness.]
Saturday, 8PM in the Sanctuary, The Great Vigil of Easter. The first Easter service and the most profound. We trace the good news through the stories of salvation in the Bible and celebrate the first Alleluia's of Easter.
Sunday, 11AM, The Feast of the Resurrection, Easter Morning. Alleluia! Potluck brunch. We will provide a ham and lamb roast. Plan to bring a yummy side dish.
